Process
Janis’ sculptures are one-of-a-kind, each dreamed up first in her sketchbook...

She mixes her own stoneware clay body, then carefully hand-builds each creation using clay slabs to make a foundational base.
She then builds vertical walls using flattened coils, keeping a hollow inner core.
She spends hours sculpting and attaching additional elements (birds, twigs, flowers, leaves, etc.).
She textures the surface with a dulled knife and other modeling tools.
The first layer of slip or underglaze is added before the initial bisque firing.
Then additional washes of underglazes, oxides, and glazes are added in multiple oxidation firings.
Janis fires within a temperature range of cone 06-6.
Janis teaches her ceramic techniques at workshops and clay classes both locally and nationally, and enjoys teaching all ages and skill levels.
